Internet of things is a name describing interconnection of all our devices between each other and with the internet. This is mostly about something smart, with connectivity and without a display. Smart fridge, intelligent lighting sensor, smart lock, smart speaker and so on.
Nevertheless, they seem pretty small compared to a conventional laptop or PC and can give the impression that there is nothing inside, but it is false. What they all have in common is connectivity and that they are small computers. Every such device has an operating system supporting the full stack of network protocols.
Because they are small and look like a "calculator", no one really cares about their security and, what is most important, built-in functionality to update the firmware inside. Most such devices use everything outdated with well-known vulnerabilities and proven exploits. It is just a low hanging fruit for any hacker.
Because they are computers, they have vulnerabilities and can be hacked. And that is regular happening. It bears the most risk for companies, who protect their network and regularly update servers and laptops. Having one smart bulb installed in the office and connected to the company's network can almost wipe out the whole defence. For the commoner, the main risk lies in unwilling participation in attacks and malicious activities. A good example here is a DDOS attack. It is when all coffee machines in the world together with fridges start sending malicious network packets to a single online store. Later will go down as they will overload him.
Keep this in mind when buying a new toy and pay attention to the possibility of updating your device in the future.
