European Policy Centre recognised the significance of the #quantum #threat and issued a #discussion paper outlining their point of view.

1. Quantum Computers & Cybersecurity: Quantum computing is evolving rapidly, and with it comes a new set of challenges for European online security. Imagine a future where our current encryption methods are obsolete! 😲

2. The Threat Landscape: There's a race against time as adversaries are downloading encrypted info now, hoping to decrypt it later when quantum tech is available. These are known as 'harvest attacks'.

3. EU's Stance: While the US is making strides in transitioning to post-quantum cybersecurity, Europe seems to be focusing more on quantum key distribution. But, there's a need for a harmonised approach to transition to post-quantum encryption in Europe. šŸ‡ŖšŸ‡ŗ

4. Recommendations for Europe:

- Draft an EU Coordinated Action Plan for the quantum transition.

- Set up an expert group within the European Union Agency for Cybersecurity (ENISA).

- Prioritise the transition to post-quantum encryption.

5. QKD vs PQC:

The choice between QKD and PQC should be dictated by specific use cases. QKD has its inherent limitations (like the absence of authentication and communication distance), whilst PQC is a more mature area of activity and offers several advantages over quantum key distribution, though it also has theoretical and practical challenges.

I reckon Australia hasn't quite acknowledged the quantum-in-cyber risk at the governmental level. We need a clear quantum cybersecurity strategy (update to a national cyber strategy?), a roadmap to quantum-proof systems, and robust backing for quantum-safe technologies. Let's get ahead of the curve, rather than playing catch-up! šŸ’Ŗ
