A vulnerability can be used in a variety of ways. These methods are reflected in the names of different types of malicious software. Let's learn some of them.

Mal-ware is literally a malicious software. A general name for everything malicious.

1. Ad-ware is when you see an advertisement without your consent.

2. Ransom-ware is when someone encrypted your files on your computer and ask a ransom to give you a decryption key.

3. Spy-ware is when someone is stealing from you something without you knowing it, for example, bank-client passwords, looking into your laptop cam and so on.

4. A rootkit or backdoor is when someone has gathered administrative access to your PC and can stealthily manipulate it in any way intruder wants. That is the most dangerous things and the most difficult to detect. You may become a part of a botnet or participate in a DDOS attack.

Other words like a trojan, virus, worm, downloader describe a way of delivering malware, but not its purpose.

The classification above is based on the purpose of the software. You may find other types of classification based on the technology used, protection measures required and so on.
